King Island
The Island is about 64 kilometres long and 27 kilometres wide, and is serviced with daily flights from Melbourne (Tullamarine and Moorabbin) and Burnie. Check Rex and King Island Airlines for details. Most freight is carried by sea.
The Island abounds in wildlife with many wallabies, turkeys and pheasants roaming wild across the island. At Grassy on the south east coast, there is a penguin rookery. King Island is renowned for the quality of its produce: King Island Cheeses, crayfish, beef and kelp products to mention a few.
King Island straddles the 40th parallel south, and the coast is littered with numerous shipwrecks and the museum at Currie has detailed history of the catastrophies with many personal accounts of the survivors with sketches and artifacts from the wrecks. The people of King Island are friendly and love to share their Island lifestyle.
Magnificent views, fresh air, clean water and a relaxed lifestyle make KI special and worth a visit.
